If you were stranded in an island with little shelter, no food, and clothing is sparse then this is the album that I wouldn't want to part with as it embraced all genres of music giving it fsc's twist and personality taking the music to a higher definition on the realities of life that people just refuse to accept. The songs in its entirety gives sanity to a demented perspective with the moving lyrics of PABRIKA, DRUGSTAR, THE PHARMACY, and OKAY.

If you seek something commercially glamorous or some sense of eargasmic fantasy then maybe...you would consider their raw and deep sensibility as far all stages of music are combined.

Dare to believe in the honesty of their music and those beats that pump like a churning machine. It's not all about the drums and the bass but in the power and raw manifesto that they have to release this.

What? Another compilation? Haha.

I came to know FoodShelterAndClothing through the local compilation 8 Track that I, as names are for tombstones, was also a part of. We were the only electronic acts in the compilation and I was happy to discover another project sharing a similar background and taste in music.

I want to believe they are a bunch of cool dudes (LOL!) since I have not met them yet. But exchanges through the years have indicated so (them being cool and fun loving guys) and we have collaborated a couple of times already through their remix/cover of NAFT's song Watari's Machine and my remix/rearrangement of their song Meet The Dead.

Looking forward to hearing and working more with these prolific and resilient (since late 80's!) guys.

The Greatest Tits (2005-2010)

This anthology chronicles our full-on foray into computer-based recording and production. For the luddites that we are, we only managed to start doing such back in 2005 (I finally got to own a workable desktop pc in late 2004). The same year when we were invited to play the Bacolod leg of the Fiestamundo.com (now defunct) concert series. Being reduced to a 2 man band, we crammed and began producing music (using a hardware sequencer patched to the pc’s soundcard via our trusty 4 track cassette recorder circa 1993, then mixed down to a mini-disc, remember those?) that became the backing tracks for our 15 minute set (as documented on the DVD “BADACIDFLICKS”). One of the songs, was the revamped version of our 1995 single, The Pharmacy which ended up on Fiestamundo's site. We reckon, the original ’95 version was pretty much the definitive one, which can be true. But perhaps, this version made a decade later, is just as valid, and apparently a different specie altogether, with a certain menace and a sonic wallop that we thought was missing from the first version. I reckon, if the original was inspired by LSD and codeine, this version is more like a line of coke with a tab of E! The Pharmacy was also featured in one of the Overtune Project online compilation albums in 2006. Also, in the same year, we were asked by Sleepyheads' frontman Erick Encinares to contribute a song for an album, the very limited edition "8 Track" CD (now a collectors item), which we did with the then newly re-recorded version of Okay. FYI, it was one of the earliest songs we put on tape (1993), and since the original cassette recording was deemed as unplayable by then, we decided, it’s worthy enough to be resuscitated and given the modern treatment it deserves. As of this writing, Okay is still hovering Reverbnation.com’s alternative charts, which perhaps makes it our most “popular” shit online. Well, besides the porn we posts on our multiply site.

Later on in 2006, I got an email asking us if we could produce a track for an online compilation which features a host of international indie acts of various genres to help give focus to the non-profit organization, Food Not Bombs (yeah, hence the song!). The album was released around 2007, dubbed as “Escape Into Oblivion”.

It was also around this time, when we tried giving new life to some of our past tracks which we thought weren’t given much justice due to our lack of the right equipment back in the day, one of which was the supposedly “clubby vibe” of Bum Baby originally done back in 1995 which was then recorded using a crude guitar sampler. By the way, yes the song is about yours truly. You know what they say…write about what you know! Anyhow, making electronic dance music has always been one of our goals since day one, and having a computer at our disposal was a realization of that dream. Ergo, “the full-on 4 on the floor with blinding strobelights” version of Bum Baby included right here. Incidentally, both versions of Bum Baby and Krafty (Brutal Mix) were never officially released, thus are exclusive to this compilation. Whilst Krafty (Blitz Mix) was included in the SSS compilation, HolidaySSS.

Speaking of Krafty, it was also around '07 when Lionel Valdellion (QED Records' head honcho) mentioned in one of his posts on his online label's site, that it'd be a good idea if he could release a New Order tribute album, featuring all Pinoy acts, particularly those on QED’s roster. Being such massive fans of the Mancunian lot, we immediately started working on Krafty, which for us was quite a fitting track, considering it’s the first single from the last New Order album. And I'd like to think that its title is an homage of sorts to one of their main influence, Kraftwerk, in which we're also huge fans of (duh!). Unfortunately, that planned tribute was shelved, maybe because we’re the only ones who actually went on and recorded a track?. Regardless of which, we're proud of this version, and we thought it was just right that we're actually able to do it, and not just on a live setting (note: we used to cover Dream Attack and Love Vigilantes during our days with The Bottles). Speaking of which, The Manifest was actually written with our former band in mind. To those familiar enough (man, you’re old!) with our ancient sound, it's actually the closest thing we can get to 1989 without the aid of a time machine. Fuck, we even employed the fretwork prowess of Roland (a veteran heavy metal axeman from Bacolod) to do all the scorching solos to make the nostalgia trip plausible. And to this day, if there is one song that truly represented our genre-bending musical roots, hands down, The Manifest is it! In fact it was so dear to us, it’s our only song which was released as a triple maxi-single with a countless number of versions, and remixes from various acts. Unfortunately, I don’t think a lot of people actually heard of it at all! But we’re not surprised really, considering that back in 2008, it was like the height of fuckin Emo and Hipster shit, and those pussies would rather weep and die on a dark corner with their skinny jeans on, than listen to a song that goes “We’re the suicide bombers, motherfuckers. Leading your daughters to the slaughter!”

Now, if there is one song that came by accident on this compilation, it's Tokers Now! Recorded in under an hour, one lazy Saturday afternoon, while chillin’ with one of Sugar City's finest hip hop son Aero. Take note, it was actually the first time we met!!! Though I've heard from sources that he is one helluva freestyler, and apparently he proved that fact (his rap was a one take wonder yo!). We consider it as the sequel to our 1993 song, Tokers Inc.. Ah the mindboggling delights of beer and weed.

Later that evening, right after Jem recorded his tracks for his FucktheFuckingFuckers' project. I saw in one of his notes the lyrics for Meet The Dead. I told him, I wrote an “ode to robots” which might suit his words, and it’ll be perfect as our Halloween single! By the way, the song has nothing to do with ghouls and ghosts, it’s about 'em poor "white collar zombies" (nee office/factory drones), that we all dread of becoming.

As for Communique and Drugstar, both tracks we're recorded again in one afternoon, when our longtime guitarist Christian (who is based in Japan) came by for a visit. Apparently, the dude's chops are still tight enough to do such disparate songs in one session. Incidentally Communique (Inbox Mix) was featured in A Sound Relief (2009), an online benefit album for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy, as produced and compiled by Erik "Cerumentric" Fabian. Whilst the Outbox Mix, was included in the Digi-Love compilation series, produced and compiled by laptop muso Happyboy.

As for Drugstar, perhaps it’s one of our most popular track here in Sugar City based on the number of months (yes, months!) it stayed on Killer Bee FM’s Indie Charts. It’s quite amusing having a pro-drugs song being aired on mainstream radio!

In early 2010, Happyboy asked if I could contribute a spoken word bit to a project he's working on. Using my damn cellphone as a voice recorder, and half a bottle of brandy, Hate was born! As honest as I want to have it on record, I left my stuttering and quivering voice in! it's one fucked up stream-of-consciousness bit! Now please don't ask me who the person is I'm referring to in it…I'll never tell! Trivia, this is the only Pinoy song I know in existence that contains the ancient and mystical Hispanic term of endearment, “Hijo de Puta” in the lyrics!

Oh yeah, The Theme from Dungeons and Drugwhores, is actually the “b side” (bonus track) of the Drugstar maxi single.

And Pornitude is partly a 2010 update of our 1996 “piano on meth” track Amphibian Ambition, from the album “A Series of Low Blows”, and also included in "Analogue Whores". And parts of it are outtakes from the Pabrika sessions. Its just a little attempt to go back to our jazz roots…with an imaginary porn flick soundtrack in mind!

Now, you might be wondrin’ how much lazier one can get having only these handful of tracks released over the past 5 years? On the contrary, it’s the busiest time of our entire musical existence ever! All throughout that time period, we did the FFF project, and our collaboration with Las Vegas-based Drum n Bass artist Trihexy, dubbed as StripStrip. While on a personal level, as The Roadside Bums, I was doing loads of remastering and remixing work for almost all SSS releases
(and managing the label too!), as well as doing post-production work for the entire FS&C back catalogue which were subsequently released online. I also did some songwriting and production stints for Joyce Agacer, The Colloidal Mixtures, Light$leep3r, Moaner Lisa, El Kiko's Way, Hardwater (a full-length endeavor called The Prophecy), The Ministry of Truth and most recently, doing post-production duties for L1nt3ch. I also still have pending collaborations with Dhubbly and Cycosis. And don’t forget, I even had the time to do The PodCraSSSh! I guess, we’re too lazy to do anything else but music! Hell, I can’t wait for 2011 to do more of the same shit! Which reminds me, I have to sincerely thank all the lovely peeps mentioned here, for letting me mess with their ouvres, and also to everyone who gave us the opportunity to let us do what we always wanted to do. Y’all been such a blessing and an inspiration.

The Gadfly Generations
(Notes from the Gadfly HQ)

Before we consider these blokes as “the ska proponents of Bacolod and Neg. Occ.” they were a part of the genre-hopping generation (yes, we mean the 90’s). It was 1995 when Emman Villacrusis (guitarist of Manila-based underground metal/hardcore outfit "Isvarah") thought of naming a newly formed band along with brothers Edu and Carlo Broce. He was interested with the name "gadfly" while reading a book and looked for the meaning of it in the dictionary and it was defined as "a term used for flies that annoy horses and other livestock" and "a person who upsets the status quo". By then they started to play Alice in Chains, Dishwalla and Silverchair covers (trivia: they were all based in San Carlos City and they're schoolmates in La Salle Bacolod as well). It was also for a fact that Ray and Bambam of Vertigo were a part of the first generation of the band.
New line up changes was made and on 1998 when Angelo Cosas filled in the shoes as a new frontman he delivered lines with stage antics akin to the likes of the baggy pants of former mortician Jonathan Davis while playing Coal chamber covers, he kicked a lot of serious ass. Another batch of shoe-fillers namely QQ Quisumbing and Jasper Borbajo (s.o.s/barbi na doll/tanya markova) shared the vocal chores with QQ doin' some growls and Jasper does the rapping (?) doing covers of tracks by Soulfly, System of a down, Limp Bizkit made them the nu metal band to beat. It was also the same year when Jetjet Maranon(original bassist and soon the new vocalist) came into the picture again and suggested to incorporate some punk and ska like a bit of Rancid, Jimmies chicken shack, Goldfinger and Down by Law...the late Jbee Borbajo(Barbi Na Doll/Tanya Markova) became the bassist when Carlo Broce left the band to work as an International Flight Attendant.

With the help of Jay Art/Boyet Descutido shelving out records (on original cassette tapes) with Red Grageda (a professed skinhead of Manila and at that time a resident and owning an LPG business in Homesite, Bacolod)..They offered a lot from their record collections for Gadfly to be immersed in "ska/reggae/swing/rocksteady" genres. Lots of Tanduay long neck rhums were downed before they thought of adding a horn section. They scouted from La Salle and San Agustin Brass band members to officially make it a seven piece band with Gardo Gallespen on Sax, Allan Lecciones and Jued Lanawan on Trumpet(owning their personal credits to Mr. Joseno Panisales for letting them borrow the instruments in school). With sharp costumes, pork pie hats, two tone motifs and suspenders made it their image which stood out amongst all the local bands in Sugar City...Playing Reel big fish, The Specials, Put3ska, Bob Marley, Mighty Bosstones and even Tropical Depression made them an instant hit with exposures on the local media and other special events, and even in out-of-town gigs. Original songs like "Marry me Jane" and "Global Warming" became their staples and were included in the “Suck Sugarcane Suck” (2002) compilation album, featuring some of Bacolod's finest bands. Their national breakthrough is when they were included in the ClubSka Manila underground compilation "Piliskapinas" which had their song "Bar/Beach" included. Gadfly inspired a lot of local bands like Ganjam, Grin Leafy Vegetables, Sideska Tempura, Javaskaggs, Cindy Poppin', Ninja Star Piaya and even the city’s premiere pop-punk band, Katumbal produced an awesome “punkified” cover of “Marry Me Jane” .
In 2004, when they got tired of stomping their boots, they explored other Jamaican flavas like dancehall, reggae and dub. T’was around this time when they added keyboardists (Brian and Rommel), all around “emergency men” (Bombom and Kid) plus Storky on percussion and Pakz of Dezmegraena on vocals, on various sessions. There’s also an unrecorded song, “Tripping Dub” which is the bands fave, and they hope to be able to put on tape real soon.
Currently, six of the members are already based in Manila where they occasionally do gigs, and they even took the time to do a one-off reunion here in Sugar City last year. Apparently the lads are keeping the fires a burnin' as we raise a glass for them. May Gadfly continue to “annoy” us mammals with more of their fly sounds.

Musicas de Putas

Back in the day when every aspiring band in the country was trying hard to be the next Eraserheads, and every major record label were cashing in on the bandwagon of what they marketed as "alternative" Pinoy rock. These hicks from Sugarlandia were busy reinventing OPM by assimilating global music trends mixed with their prime influences from all over the musical map. Furiously writing, recording, and even independently releasing their own cassette albums, and selling them via mail-order (yes kids, it’s what your folks refer to as the pre-internet days). Never once succumbing to local tastes (thank heavens for that) but satisfying their own. FoodShelterAndClothing may not have mattered to most OPM pundits as they have never quite achieved the recognition and adoration of the mainstream. Not to mention, their proximity from Manila, where all the supposedly hot shit acts are. But as apparent to this collection, they have accomplished something close or even akin to most unsung yet seminal music legends of the past, who eventually became influential in their own right.

As far as this writer is concerned, they opened up my senses to the then burgeoning electronica and dance music scenes, when grunge and novelty type Pinoy pop ruled the airwaves. They fueled my angst-filled teen years with industrial metal and electro-punk when everyone I know were proclaiming their love of Axl Rose and Bon Jovi. Hell, they (FS&C) even preceded the 80's retro phenomenon of the 00's inanely dubbed as "nu rave" and "electro-clash" with their penchant for producing unabashed synth-pop ditties (whilst garbed in collared shirts and blazers), back when everyone was busy aching to be the new guitar god. Moreover, I recall back in 1992, that they are also one of the few “rock-oriented” bands to have actually utilized the turntable as an instrument, long before the advent of the so called “nu metal” bands with their hip hop posturings. Pioneers you say? Maybe, but after listening to their stuff, its safe to say, that they are no more than a

bunch of freaks who’s just always one step ahead of the pack.

These collection of tracks from their "analogue vault",are more than enough evidence that FS&C is not a "has been" nor a "never was" (apparently, they are more like the “been there, done that” types), but perhaps they can now be regarded as a bonafide icon, that is regardless of where your musical affiliations lie. Perhaps they are considered as the true "Lo-Fi Warriors" (as stated in one of their concert flyers from more than a decade ago) in some parallel universe, where the late John Peel is alive and is the house DJ, Godflesh and Kraftwerk are the house bands, non-working holidays are declared whenever there's a festival featuring Can, Joy Division, The Doors, and The Velvet Underground, and yes, a place where David Bowie is the prime minister, and The Sex Pistols and The Clash are members of the parliament. Now, unlike that old adage: "the more you change, the more you stay the same", in a musical sense, FS&C is the complete anti-thesis of that! So here's looking forward to them “staying the same, yet forever changing”, while we await for the next collection. "Digital Bitches", anyone?

Twenty Twelve –

Some of the things people expect in 2012 are: a cataclysm of the 4 elements (earth, fire, wind, water), a pandemic, an asteroid (or Planet X) on a collision course with the Earth, a polar shift, an ice age, a spiritual enlightening. The Mayans prophesied an entry into a new cycle, where their Long Count Calendar "resets" to the 13th katun on December 20, 2012.

Cold Fusion –

Cold fusion IS the future. Big Oil has silenced one of the foremost names in the advocacy of cold fusion, Dr. Eugene Mallove (whose name appears in the credits of the cold fusion-inspired film ,The Saint). The Earth is 2/3 water, the human body is 2/3 water, and water recycles itself too. A cold fusion reaction is self-sustaining, a characteristic inherent to water which is cold fusion's primary raw material.

Walk in the Sky –

On October 17, 1917, the sun "danced" to a crowd of 70,000 in Cova da Iria, Portugal. The Secrets of Fatima were revealed to three children; a great prophecy that outlines war, famine, and a firing squad of members of the Church, including the Pope.

World Peace –

A satirical take on the Second Coming.

"Uplifting music for the soul," is how Elkiko's Way describes his music. Aptly titled 'Deus ex Machina', Elkiko is the guy you'll take to have gone thru some nice nasty fixes. Tight and quick, El spins a sonic yarn so groovin', you'll sleigh ride your filthy-rich ass home to Rio de Em-em.

And so it was that Elkiko stumbled upon Triad Records in his day job at the prestigious People Support University. Full-fledged student of life, making music with laudable wit. From the local flick starrer to the Celebrity Deathmatch of NIN and the Motherman and conflict resolution imperatives, El just might signal the 'test of the emergency broadcast system'. And that's just some Descartes goin down track2.

Just when you thought the party's over, synapses retransmit and pupils dilate to the mercy of white light and Elkiko's Way.

Now here's what the man (nee el kiko) has to say....

Deus Ex Machina - god from the machine

1. In Greek and Roman drama, a god lowered by stage machinery to resolve a plot or extricate the protagonist from a difficult situation.
2. An unexpected, artificial, or improbable character, device, or event introduced suddenly in a work of fiction or drama to resolve a situation or untangle a plot.

And just what somebody needs out of nihilism....

1. Tony Falcon 2010 - Agent X44 Tony Ferrer - Saw the actor in Podium around 2004 all dressed in stunning white like a frustrated Elvis impersonator with matching goggles and sideburns. For some reason, I started hearing bongo drums and old Santana music all over (reminiscent of the background music of fight scenes of the action movies of the late 60s' and early 70s') and imagined him doing his famous Karate Chops in a satire setting. He really presented himself to me as a theme without him knowing at that moment. Later, round 2007, agent X44 came into revival....Hmmmm....did my thoughts come into being? Not exactly dejavu but something to that effect...

2. Des Kartes - As a Rene Descartes fanatic would philosophically say, "cogito ergo sum" or "I think therefore I am". And so i thought.....

3. Trent Reznor meets the Motherman - This is what you come up with after listening to NIN's old "Pretty Hate Machine" cd and reading about Math's "Chaos Theory" - They just don't mix!!! But after 2 bottles of Red Horse, 1 Pale Pilsen and a half pack of Winston Lights,....It did!!!!

4. Los Hunyangos - This song was made In loving memory of the politicians who seem to know everything, do everything and say everything except the right thing. May they soon rest in peace.

5. SDK de UFC - grooves depicted from the images you see in a UFC bout. Bloody, jagged and brutal, but at the same time graceful and systemic. Strangely, I like watching these bouts while playing Dream Theater, Yes, Rush or some other progressive rock band. Both seem to place chaos in proper order.

Die Einstein Chakras Tale

It was July 1994 when Einstein Chakras was born. Their first rehearsal was in Pritel, Tondo studio for 60 bucks with just an electric fan (no air-conditioning). The bands name then was Die Einstein (german for The Einstein). Einstein Chakras is a “scientist punk” band, it means synthesis of matter and ideas, it deals in our organic experiences, in short its a long story. Influenced by Bobby and Alfred of The Wuds (pioneers of Pinoy Punk), Pinoy Folk legends Asin, Toydolls, The Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Clash, The Smiths and other protest and socio-political conscious artists.

The ideology is leftist, the music punk. In the Philippines, where money is scarce and FM radio formats predominantly colonial, Einstein Chakras are representative of every proletariat worker’s revolution agenda. Their debut release Les Arbre tackles socio-cultural issues like neo-imperialism and minimum wage. With globalization and democracy mainly serving US interests, the Chakras’ anthemic Hangga’t Maaari (Ayokong Pumatay) (in English: as much as possible, I do not want to kill) is an echo of the rest of the world’s aversion to stateside influence.

Knop Reyes is the voice , the writer, and the maker of their songs. Andy on lead guitar and Nodie on bass. Sid Gabrillo came when the group decided to get a really good drummer. The group then, rehearsed on Sid’s garage in Makati. former members of Einstein Chakras were Ken Dela cruz, Brandy and Prans.

Their first political song was Joe’s Pet that has gotten airplay in Visayas and some parts of Mindanao.
Their debut album “1st Plenum in the Kingdom of Necessity” is still out in the metro.

They were also featured in “Huling Balita Album: Songs for the Disappeared” was launched at the Newsdesk Café in Quezon City last April 27, 2008.
The said album was for the benefit of the Free Jonas Burgos Movement, to bring awareness to the countless victims of human rights abuses perpetrated by the so called powers-that-be. They were alongside such noteworthy Pinoy acts like, Jess Santiago, Noel Cabangon, Radioactive Sago Project, Cooky Chua among others.

The band plays in Mayrics, Freedom Bar, Sazi’s Bar, Dayo Bar, Saguijo, and other bars in Manila that has attitude. They also play in historical mobilizations for working class interest. Einstein Chakras is affiliated with Rock Against the Round an Anti-WTO movement.

Remembering late '92, t'was when The Colloidals adapted Polly as part of their repertoire in their live gigs. Despite Nevermind already a massive hit in the international charts, they actually based their rendition on the track from the lesser known Incesticide album, the one dubbed as (New Wave )Polly. Opening for The Bottles (fs&c's previous incarnation) farewell gig in early '93, The band showed no mercy onstage playing their punk and prog-rock inspired versions of tracks by Metallica, Helmet, Living Colour, as well as their original compositions, and of course this particular track by Nirvana. Little did we know back then that Kurt Cobain will somehow become our generation's Ian Curtis a year later. The biggest regret really was we never got to capture their performance on video as it turned out to be their last gig as a band as well. Now, I don't mean to go esoteric here, but last month I dreamt of 'em playing Polly, which made me email Ian (The Colloidals frontman) and suggested to him to do an updated (albeit re-arranged) version based on his long obsession of mod music (suffice it to say, he's a big fan of The Jam as well), to which of course he said yes with much excitement. In fact, the man is so excited with this development, that he is currently working on a full-on covers EP, featuring his take on modern classics from The Smithereens, and the Violent Femmes to name but a few. The said EP is slated for release late this year via SSS naturally. Anyhoo, with this "mod-ified" version, Ian said: "wherever he is, I hope it'll make Kurt crack a little smile, as he remembers his pre-stardom days when he all wanted was to play his brand of Pixies and Dwarves inspired punk rock , and grunge wasn’t even considered a genre yet by the fuckin’ music press". To which I replied: "The only band who actually embraced the dodgy term (sarcastically I suppose) was Mudhoney, and no one else that I know of". So we say…long live Polly (and Mark Arm too)!

Barbi Na Doll=bnd

…is a concept band that plays "melodic" originals and some covers w/ influences from pop/rock/dance/new wave/fusion/ OPM w/ a strong Negrense spirit. The meaning is literally "Barbie Doll" in the vernacular. Barbie has come to be the symbol of the ultimate in feminine. She represents our aspirations, our admirations, our frustrations.

Formed in 2005 (with Original drummer Benji Apoyon), coming from different groups. Most of us are from "Gadfly," a locally known band in Negros. Based in Bacolod City, the band regularly plays in different bars, major events, private functions, and out of town gigs. The band has also appeared on TV and in print as well as on the radio. We have also had the privilege of opening w/ different OPM bands.

Our ultimate goal is to have a record deal with a major label that will help us produce our album.

(No, I’m still not getting paid for writing this!)

“Unlike their past albums which just hits you with a sonic wallop

and electronic bombast from alpha to omega,

this one actually is a grower. And not unlike most of the albums which people deemed as “classics”, this too has multiple layers and textures just like a fine painting or book. If you’re familiar with their earlier efforts, this has the electro punk intensity of their self-titled debut, the doom rock stance of their second “Cut & Paste”,

and the prog-pop sense of “A Series Of Low Blows” (their 4th album).

Quite brilliant really for what these mofos consider as their “last” album”

“EXCUSE US FOR EVERYTHING”

This album was originally released in November of 2004, months after the release of our nationally distributed “CRACKED E.P.” (under TRIAD RECORDS).

We intentionally kept this record under the radar so to speak, as not to affect the sales of the said EP which has 2 of the tracks (PLANET GIRL and DEAD TOWN) taken from this album.

In fact it was so hush hush, we didn’t bother publicizing, promoting, or even make a fuckin’ puny Twit ‘bout it on the internet. We just made a few copies for longtime pals who are mostly abroad. Though, we did manage to post some of the tracks off it in our Soundclick page over the years. One thing was clear though, around that time we decided not to make anymore albums. Hence we truly consider this as our “last” full-lenght album. Apparently, after which we’ve only released singles and EP’s, and to this day we still not ever gonna release an album (unless its just a compilation like MIXIFIED), or unless we consider it truly necessary (i.e. either to make an artistic expression, or there’s really some serious money to be had, which we doubt, hehe). I could elaborate the reasons why, but it’s quite a long and boring story really.

The songs here were sporadically recorded over the course of 3 years, from 2001 to

2004. Two of which (UNAFFECTED and RECURRENT CORNERS), were originally commissioned by an Indian film maker, Biju Viswanath for his short-film DÉJÀ VU

(no relation of course to that Denzel Washington sci-fi movie), back in 2001 (Yup, years before Slumdog Millionaire, haha!). I met him via the UKScreen site (where he emailed me the draft of the script), and unfortunately we haven’t seen the said film up to the present (perhaps like everything else these days, it might be on YouTube), and since we lost touch, I’m not even sure if the songs actually made it to the final cut. Anyhoo, those songs were some of the first ones we did for this record. During which time, me and Jem were working as a duo, after Chris and Ian went abroad, and so we recorded some tracks minus the guitars (just a double-tracked overdriven bass, like in GO IN PEACE!), which was nuthin new, coz we’re used to do shit like that when we were just starting out. Jem even played a borrowed beaten up Gibson to play in PLANET GIRL (one of the very few songs we did where he played the guitar on). In 2002, we did sessions with a longtime pal from our BOTTLES days, and that’s Jassel, a very cool sax player that played with us in our farewell gig as the Bottles back in ‘92. What came out of it, was the full-on jazz track MESSAGE FAILED. An improvisational piece based on a SADE backbeat. Incidentally, this was the tune that inspired me years later to write COMMUNIQUE. Speaking bout inspirations, the TITLE TRACK, one of the last tunes we recorded for this album, was also instrumental (no pun intended) in making me write THE MANIFEST last year

(check out the almost similar guitar riff).

Between 2002 to 2004, Ian came back from lalaland, and so began our “garage days”. That time we tried to steer clear from almost anything electronica, and make a more guitar-oriented record. And so majority of the tracks from thereon were recorded live and direct with minimum overdubs. We so badly wanted to do a “live” record that we didn’t even bother polishing the tracks, so you’ll hear some bum notes and missed cues on some of ‘em, which we deliberately kept to amuse ourselves (as always!). Ian also got to contribute a track, FILTH which he sang lead vocals, and played the guitar. The last time he did so was back in 1995 in our CUT & PASTE album, where he did SCULLY’s SONG. This reminds me, GO IN PEACE!, was perhaps the only song wherein the 3 of us actually got to sing lead vocals! That’s another one for the books right there, hehe. FECAL FREAK was what we considered as the first single taken from this record, it was released online via QED RECORDS years ago. It’s our ode really to The Stooges, but with a twist of turntablism courtesy of our resident DJ, Ian. Incidentally, it may have a catchy punk rock melody, but its got the most radio unfriendly lyrics ever! It’s a mockery really of the then burgeoning Emo scene, wherein “feeling like shit” is supposedly cool, ah fuckin’ kids! Oh yeah, in case you’re wondering why the drums sounds like some public toilet you’d rather pee in yer pants than go into, it’s because we processed it via a guitar distortion pedal, hence the “shitty” sound, haha. Speaking of mockery, GO IN PEACE! pokes fun on the then dying Nu metal scene, where kids thought “limp bizkit and not the gorilla biscuits is hardcore!”. Apart from all these shenanigans, most of the songs here I consider as quite serious. From Jem, there’s PROUD OF NOTHING, truly a punk rocker’s lament, DEAD TOWN 1 and 2, which is the closest thing we did to 70’s era prog-rock (check out Ian’s superb guitar solo here), and of course DROWNED, which a pal once said: “sounds like a Joy Division B side!”, haha.

TUFF TIMES, is yes…our homage to the Boss (BRUUUUUUUUCE!), which perhaps is now a very appropriate song to play amidst all the doom and gloom we face. PLANET GIRL, is another homage, this time to our favorite late 70’s-early 80’s “power poppers”, Marshall Crenshaw, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, Tommy Keene, etc. By the way, this track features a guest spot from Max Reynard Cordero, frontman of the Rubberduckies and now of Hardwater (on backing vocals). As for the last track, OBLIGATORY JUNKIE ANTHEM #69, I must admit it came out as an afterthought. Y’see, all of our other albums contained at least 1 or 2 tunes ‘bout “mind-altering” substances. We actually, didn’t set out to have made them that way, it’s just so. Anyhow, this track was inspired by our fondness of what maybe considered then as “proto-chill” (aka chillout now), as exemplified by acts by Moodswings, Coldcut, Deep Forest, Enigma, etc., it’s music that we like to listen to around 4 in the morning, after a night of debauchery. Conspicuously, this track became a blueprint of sorts for our early remix productions for other artists (if your familiar with MIXIFIED, you’ll understand what I’m referring to).

Personally, after our previous full-length album which was the BAYLANS soundtrack, I reckon all these songs truly characterize how we are as band in the early part of the 21st century. I’d like to think we’re a bit mature then, and yet still full of shit! Haha!

SYNOPSIS
BAYLANS: Hack the Culture
(the comic book)

It is the year 2004, two years after the successful coup d'etat was thrown against the Estrada government. The Philippines is once again in martial rule. Human rights are violated everywhere. The desperate masses have abandoned traditional religion and have turned to ancient pagan gods. And dark asuwang spirits roam the skies.

Deep within the suburban jungle, a hacker extraordinaire named Jonas Arcanghel uncovers the secret of an ancient copperplate artifact that prophesies the return of an ancient Malayan magickal civil society, believed to be first Filipino nation. Now, he is the prime target of a mad government, caught in the middle of an intricate web of conspiracies, tracing back to the EDSA Revolution, the Katipunan, and Philippine pre-Hispanic history.

Jonas Arcanghel enlists the aid of fellow anarchists, hackers, techno-shamen and magickal practicioners, belonging to the renegade group, Baylans. Together, they will wage a desperate war against the darkest force the Filipino people has ever known.

THE RETURN OF MY CYBER-EVIL TWIN

Way before there was Friendster, Jason Banico was already using the internet to map out how we are all connected in just six or less degrees. His networking from person to person is how he became part of Alamat Comics.

Jason was the one who created the first Alamat website and made Alamat part of the ever growing universe that was cyberspace. (Yup, back then it was cool to put the word “cyber” in the name of your comic book character.)

When Jason started the BAYLANS project, he wanted it to be a multi-media experience. He pitched the project as: “BAYLANS: Hack the Culture is a 3-issue comic-book, a cyberpunk / dark fantasy epic story on the struggle of one man against an oppressive dictatorial regime and the rising tide of chaos.”

Using his cyber-network (does that just sound so cool?), he was able to bring together people to create the comic book, the website, and the soundtrack. (At that time, I think only “”Witchblade” had a comic book soundtrack.)

The group he tapped to do the soundtrack was a Bacolod-based band called FoodShelter&Clothing, lead by Bong Tan-- my cousin.

Karen Kunawicz once described Bong as my evil twin.

If my room back in our Quezon City house was covered with posters of comic book characters, Bong’s room supposedly looks exactly the same, except it’s deck with posters of rock bands. Bong also keeps a day-job to maintain his true passion for music (and porn).

He used to distribute FoodShelter&Clothing’s albums via cassette tapes, with “album covers” printed out on dot-matrix printers. These days, he has unleashed their music on the net. No one is safe!

The second and third issue of BAYLANS never saw print. It became a casualty of the timesink known as the “9 to 5 job”.

Now that the BAYLANS soundtrack has been placed online, maybe this will serve as incantation to summon the Baylans from the lost sector of cyberspace.

THE SOUNDTRACK

It was the year 2000, and we were officially tapped by author, Jason Banico, as soon as he heard a copy of our 1999 compilation MULTIPLESTABWOUNDS, which we freely distributed to
friends and supporters in Metro Manila. If memory serves, he liked our brand of “industrial rock”, and he suggested we used that approach in making the soundtrack. He emailed us a draft of his work (this was months before the release of the comicbook), as we wanted to write the songs around the characters, kinda like a theme track for each individual character, and situation akin to a proper film score (which we’ve always wanted to do, and we’re still waiting for offers to do that bit, hint hint). Also, again if memory serves (I’m sorry t’was really 2000 braincells ago), he asked if we could include some of our signature tracks, specifically CYBERSONG, and NO POINT which he reckons suited the aural landscape of the BAYLANS world. Of course, we gladly obliged, since both tracks from 92-93 are not only close to our hearts, but are fine representations of our band at that point in time. After having read the manuscript so to speak, I remember writing HACK THE CULTURE, SHOOTING BLANKS, and VICTIMS OF THE SYSTEM in 3 succeeding days. Yup, I was on a roll and bursting with inspiration especially that the books theme concerns Philippine politics and cyberpunkdom, subjects which I never get tired of contemplating about (aside from food, drugs, and sex of course).
REMASTERED CD SLEEVES

What tickled us due to its sheer irony, was that we’re gonna do the music for a cyberpunk/ sci-fi/ fantasy comicbook, using a very low-tech 4 track cassette recorder! You can’t hack this hackers! Yes, no computer was actually used in the making of this soundtrack (we only started using one 5 years later). Now don’t be alarmed if this shit sounds gritty, brittle, and wobbly, it’s just how analog technology works sometimes. Though, it’ll be great if we could redo some of the tracks using the present technology, but we’re afraid it might lose its murky sheen and muddy intensity, and it’ll just sound flat and soul-less (like 95% of crap we hear everyday).
Incidentally, while we were in the process of pre-production, me and Jem were also working on his side project, the industrial-metal-sludgezilla-monster that is FULLTIMEBIGOT. To which we decided to write and include some of the tracks as his then alter ego, only coz somehow we had this idea of some freaky geek reading the comicbook in his room while listening to the soundtrack, and in certain parts of the book, he’d be hearing this primordial burst of sludge that may appropriately serve as musical backdrop to certain key “scenes” in the book. Also, around this time we were working as a trio (with long-time collaborator/conspirator multi-instrumentalist/ turntablist extraordinaire Ian Laczi), as our original guitarist Christian del Castillo then was preparing to leave for Japan (he only contributed on THE RAPE OF MAKILING which is like a twisted/distorted samba-bossa instrumental only he can devise, and on IN-YOUR-FACE which was recorded live and direct to a 2 track tape deck). But it’s fair to say that the tracks here won’t be quite as compelling without the skills of Ian (check out his turntable work on the title track (the intro/extro jungle beats aint loops but real 33 1/3 vinyl spinning at 45rpm), and in XENOCIDE, a track which we remixed 6 years later and was included in the S.A.B.A.W. project compilation cd). Not to mention his fretwork on THE GRAND ILLUSION, VICTIMS OF THE SYSTEM and SHOOTING BLANKS.
Moreover, Ian is responsible for the magical wheels of steel featured in our covers album, OTHERPEOPLESSONGS.
Now for the record, THE GRAND ILLUSION, the track written and sung by Jem will perhaps go down in our band’s history as the longest track we ever did. Even his DEAD TOWN I & II (from our 2004 CRACKED EP) were a few seconds short. In hindsight, I think this was when our musical pretensions dictated us to somehow fuse 70’s prog-rock with 80s post-punk, mixed with a dash of Tom Waits and Nick Cave.
Now isn’t that a fucked-up yet tasty stew? LOL
Anyhow, It still amuses me to this very day each time I listen to this album. It just never fails to make me smile and wonder, I mean how many Pinoy or even foreign acts we know got to actually score an entire comic book? Call me an egomaniacal twat, but dammit I call this a fucking triumph!

The year was 1996, just several months after their “highly acclaimed” (i.e. according to several music critics and most of their long time pals) album A SERIES OF LOW BLOWS was released.
(original cassette sleeve 1996)

The mofos got itchy (as always!) and try to dabble in what is known as worldbeat (apparently, a feat they failed when they tried it during The High Command sessions) peppered with orchestral, film scores, and jazz noodlings thrown in the mix (attributed to their fondness of music from Peter Gabriel, David Byrne, Brian Eno, Paul Simon, Philip Glass, dixieland jazz, et. al.). Bong started to record a bunch of instrumentals on his own as inspired by the pre-recorded musings (more like stream of conciousness ramblings which is just righteous) of the Philippines’ premiere Goth high priestess/writer/poet/pir8 queen Karen Kunawics, who earlier contributed on their LOW BLOWS track “The 6th. Sound” (w/c she also co-wrote the lyrics). Incidentally, her spoken word contribution was culled from the same 60 minute cassette she sent which the said track were “sampled” from. I’m using the word “sampled” sparingly, coz technically the band don’t have a real sampler at their disposal (up to now), but needless to say they’re massive fans of the said “art form” since the mid-80’s (they admitted in the past having worshipped in the altars of Big Audio Dynamite, PWEI, and Sigue Sigue Sputnik). It’s just right to say that this project is Bong’s brainchild from the onset, and it was only later when he asked James to sing in the “bebop-jazz” number, “B-boppin’ for Her”, which he did, in an impromptu (or what the hip hop peeps refer to as “freestylin’”) manner after being smashed on chemicals and shit, wherein he morphed into
Dean Martin complete with a cocktail in hand, and perhaps his cock in the other hand (no one can tell what these fuckers were up to then, and now). He also played the bass in a few other tracks, and so was their original guitarist Christian who played in a coupla’ tracks as well. As Bong said, “they’re the only mofos who could understand what the fuck it is I’m trying to do musically, and they’re cheap bastards, they’ll work for food and booze”.

Ironically, despite this being his baby, Bong didn’t sing a single word in the album.
When asked why, he said “I can’t sing and play music at the same time”, hmm…fair enough I guess?!
Apparently, their non-rock pretensions came into fruition on this project, which only resurfaced a decade later with their single COMMUNIQUE (released last year, and became a local radio indie smash, peaking at #2, and #3 as of this writing).
You can also hear strains of this album, on such recent fs&c works, specifically ANOTHER YEAR IS HERE (from MIXIFIED), and DUNGEONS & DRUGWHORES (from DRUGSTAR)
Asked if he would consider resurrecting this project, Bong said: “why the hell not? But I’d have to ask Karen to send in new material, or else it wouldn’t be Half and Half at all, it’ll just be me playing with my organ, now who would want that? Unless you wanna play with my trumpet? How ‘bout my flute? C’mon! huh?” Now, that’s my cue to leave him to his own devices.

This one's requested by a long lost pal who just came back from the land of oz.hope all's well m8:-)
the song was originally recorded back in 1995 and is included in our second cassette album "cut and paste". eventually, it was remixed and included in our first nationwide released, CRACKED EP under the defunct Triad records, back in 2004. then, we decided to re-recorded it as a duo back in 2005, and was included in our online double album COME AGAIN (1992-2006).incidentally, the said version has a different video included in our BADACIDFLICKS DVD(2006). whew!
as for this video, this was shot back in 1996, by ian laczi as a student project of sorts. and later despite its dodgy quality, it was exhibited at the cultural Center of the Phils., during a student film festival in the same year. whilst the "druggy" effects and additional texts were later added in 2006, as part of the mentioned dvd release.
you might be wondrin, why we went with all the trouble doin all these for just one song? well, accdg. to loads of feedback (i hope most of em our sincere, hehe), this is like the quintessential fs&c track ever made! and no gig we did was complete without any requests for this song (thats the honest truth!). personally, i find it quite funny coz we (me, jem,chris, and hugene, the drummer shown in the vid) wrote the damn thing in a few hours, and we committed it to tape in the same afternoon). it was one of the "painless" tracks we ever did, that's why i never get tired of playing, it always takes me to a place and time, when things were great,and shit was cheap! haha. anyhoo, to those of you of just heard/see this for the first timw.we certainly hope, you'll like it too:-)

First there was Hidden Agenda….
FoodShelterAndClothing’s James and Bong’s side project which began in 1994 as a means to experiment with non-rock stylings (i.e. tropical polyrhythms, jazz, African juju, French disco, et.al.). Though later, they had to change their moniker in 1997 while recording their split album with HALF&HALF
(original cassette sleeve 1997)

when they learned that there's a European dance outfit with the same name. Hence they rechristened themselves as THE HIGH COMMAND, copped from John Lithgow's character in the TV sitcom “3rd Rock from the Sun”, and T.H.C. is also known as the active narcotic agent found in cannabis sativa (yeh, they do inhale). Ironically, despite the duo’s conscious effort to veer away from their punk rock roots, the tracks that they came up with in this particular release were still reeking of the post punk stench which they just can’t get rid of, at least until the Half & Half sessions, which were anything but rock music (watch out for the re-release of that). As for the songs, these were basically James’ initial foray into being a frontman. This project preceded his fulltimebigot sludge-metal alter ego which came out in 1999, and of course the grindcore beast that is FucktheFuckingFuckers which began in 2006. Apparently, these tracks may still be rock-ish in nature, but they are not definitely metal (yet still absolutely not for the faint-hearted). Like anything from these crazy-ass mofos, it’s another guaranteed aural adventure.

MOANS AND GROANS

Moaner Lisa is a one man army. A vocalist/multi-instrumentalist born and raised in Bacolod (you can check his birth certificate if you must), and spent his wonder years in Iloilo. Despite being based in Los Angeles for nearly a decade now, the cat can still say “yuta mo eh!”, or “bilatibay niyo tanan!” as crispy and gooey as freshly baked piaya. After several years of dabbling in electronica and dance music as LightSleep3r, and dreampop with the now defunct L.A.-based band, Muted Film, he decided to pursue his other musical passion which is 60’s based psychedelic garage rock with a dash of mod, punk, and surf music (must be inspired by the beaches and bitches of L.A.). I must say, it’s a welcome treat indeed. Perhaps it will also enthuse the young uns to take interest in such a diverse and multi-faceted soundscape. He made it clear though that he wont be abandoning his electronic roots, its just right now he finds picking up a guitar, bass, and harmonica a real challenge, and a chance to go back to his roots as frontman of one of Iloilo’s premiere new wave bands in the late 80’s, the Colloidal Mixtures. Speaking of which, he did an alternate version of BAC-UP, arranged and performed in the style of his first band.
He said, it’s just an experiment, to see if he can actually resurrect the sound that made made ‘em quite a cult band back in the day. And I say, it sounds just as well if not even better. In fact, I urged him to write some more tunes in that vein, and perhaps we could release it under his old moniker, which is just righteous. I will most definitely keep you all posted regarding this.

BAC-UP

First, I find it weird talking about my lyrics, but I reckon it’d be nice to give you lovely peeps a little insight.
To those not familiar with the Philippines, the title is what we refer to as a police station/precinct, I don’t know why but that’s how it is, haha. And yes, it’s got nothing to do with the lyrics, hehe. It’s just a play on the word “back” which is the original title.
The lyrics was inspired after the homecoming last year of our (fs&c) guitarist Christian del Castillo, whom some of you might know, played in 2 of our recent singles “Communique” and “Drugstar”. It’s actually like a welcome greeting written for a long lost pal, as he’s been living in Japan, and like Moaner Lisa he’s been away for almost a decade now too. Ironically, after reviewing the song, I reckon it’s better suited for Moaner Lisa (being in a similar predicament with Chris). After hearing his take on it, hands down I say he now owns the damn muthafucker, hehe. By the way, this is just the first of a series songs I wrote for the dude, there’s a coupla more, so don’t light up yer last joint yet
As for the production process, t’was quite easy as pie. Since I’ve always been a fan of oldskool garage rock, there were just a few minor tweaks, albeit to make the tracks sound like t’was recorded in an actual garage, hehe. Just added a few contemporary twist, turns and tricks I learned from Dan “the automator” Nakamura’s school of audio sorcery, hehe. Now here it is! Crank up yer hi-fi and dance like hell!
